I interviewed my cousin from another school
Me: In your opinion, what is prejudice and discrimination?
Cousin: Prejudice is an unfounded attitude of hostility directed against someone, while discrimination is the act of specifically singling out an individual or group due to a prejudiced outlook. This occurs everywhere. Even in a nation like Singapore, where racial harmony and equality is emphasized and promoted, there are still many cases of racial prejudice. Noticeably, even today, many Singaporeans are unable to include members of other races in their activities.
Me: What do you think caused all this racial prejudice and discrimination?
Cousin: I believe that this arose due to the fact that in the 1800s dark- skinned people were discriminated against by the whites who first used them as slaves then, when they were freed, treated as inferior and used as scapegoats for all the ills of society. Hence, there is no difference now or before. These actions have taken a long time to die off and thus, even today, people feel that certain races are inferior or superior.
Me: Would you agree that in recent years, significant improvement has been made in solving this problem?
Cousin: Yes I agree. However I feel that this problem has not been eradicated entirely. Therefore I feel that to prevent these racial prejudices from continuing to lurk amongst us and eventually undermine our society, we should educate people from an early age that no matter what skin colour or religion or language, all humans are still humans and should be viewed as equals.
Me: In conclusion, what you are saying is that though vastly improved, racial discrimination and prejudice are still prevalent in today's society and there is still room for improvement, especially through educating the young and not letting the racial prejudice be passed on from generation to generation.
Cousin: That is correct.
